Mobile Strategy vs Mobility Strategy

I have been thinking about this difference the last few days. Some people use the terms interchangeably as if they mean the same thing. They don’t mean the same thing… I am still cementing my thoughts on these differences but I think it is a good exercise for all of us if we are able to go deeper into the meaning of each.

What do think? Is there a difference? Are they referring to the same thing? Or different things?

Hello there – I have never heard of ‘Mobility strategy’ in the past. I am a lot more comfortable with the term ‘Mobile’. ‘Mobility’ in my opinion is about a physical movement, something more physiological. That’s just me. In any cases, it is about being in movement, not attached to a wire, multitasking.

When thinking about mobile strategy, terms like ‘Being mobile’, ‘mobile technology’ cross my mind. The impact that mobile / wireless technology have on people and organizations in the way that it facilitates communication, like social media.

I would refer to an organization that has defined a scope and direction on the long term how they will enter the mobile market and/or how they will employ mobile technology to sell their products and/or improve customer / supplier communication.

Mobility is defined as ‘the quality or state of being mobile’ and ‘the movement of people, as from one social group, class, or level to another’ (thefreedictionary.com). So I agree with Yves that it has a more physical nature; mobility of people and the quality and state of that movement. An mobility strategy should incorporate important HR aspects concerning questions like; Are people willing to change their job occupation, organization or domain? How can the organization stimulate this? Have you ever thought about what will happen if you need to cut costs and you have to let people go or change their functions?

I think mobile strategy is something that refers to offering a mobile service in the shape of an app. That is how you design the app, the services that are offered, the project organisation that stands behind it. Ultimately how to reach your customers and to make sales using the mobile channel.

Regarding mobility strategy I agree it is something more physical. I imagine it relates to a mobile workforce for instance. Having workers that are able to work whilst being mobile and on the go (train, plane, car anything). Directing strategy towards mobile technology enabled sales, using Ipads or Iphone etc. to visualize information in business apps and demonstrating products to clients.

I think about what is mobile in terms of people, geography and devices:

1. Mobile workforce on-the-go

2. Mobile customers, vendors and partner on-the-go

3. Mobile workplaces (work smarter anywhere)

4. Mobile devices (smartphones and tablets)

Hey,

in my opinion mobile strategy is what this blog is about.

mobility strategy, however, i would consider more about mobility in the sense of movement… for instance, BMWi, BMW’s new electric concept cars, are an important movement and a groundbreaking step within mobility strategy. check ” http://www.bmw-i.com/en_ww/ ” for reference.
