Mobile Analytics

Mobile Analytics Providers

Our aim is to draft a comprehensive list of mobile analytics providers. If we are missing any please let us know in the comments section or via email. Eventually each of the names below will link to further information about these providers. For today we will only include the name and the URL. Next version will include their Twitter Accounts as well as any other relevant material that you suggest. On this page you will find links relevant to mobile analytics so keep coming back. A full post with more information on each of these will follow over the next few weeks (probably months as time allows). If you work for any one of these providers please drop us a line and send us your press package or whatever else you have so we can include as detailed a profile about you as we can.

Let us know if we missed anyone. We expect this list and page to change and grow (and perhaps even shrink) as we go along. Feel free to link to it and tweet about it… or as they say please retweet.

Update (September 24, 2009) – Added providers 32 to 36. Thanks for the people that reached out.
Update (October 23, 2009) – Added Google Analytics as provider 37. Probably should have been on the list from the beginning (although not very good for mobile analytics) but they just announced this week some enhancements so today is as good a time as any. Google is also the first live Twitter link.  I should really get going on this…

Update (December 14, 2009) – Added Umber Systems as provider 38. Looking forward to speaking with them over the next few weeks to provide further details.

Great start! I’d really love to know for each provider:

1. Platforms (web, app, which app platforms)
2. Mobile-only or cross-platform (are users tracked, or just mobile users?)
3. Approximate cost (free|$20-100/month|$100-$500/month|$500+/month)
4. Whole site, or limited number of pages on the site
5. Advertising focus? (how well does a landing page do? Who are referers?)
6. Design optimization focus? (click path analysis? A|B testing? )
7. Using 1-pixel method?
7a. Using more sophisticated 1-pixel method, TBD?
8. Using Javascript method?
9. Using server-hit method?
10. Tracking individual phone numbers?
11. Using cookie method?
12. If app, how often does it check in with server? What if no connection? Does it slow down app?

I’ve been working on analyzing the options out there, from a product development/strategy perspective. It takes a long time to derive this information from organizations.

I’m trying to make these straightforward to answer. Maybe a quick questionnaire for any provider to be on the list?

Hi Barbara – Thanks for dropping by! Those are indeed great questions. I will add them to my list and we will see how well the providers play with us.

Hi Barbara,

Good list of questions. The key to mobile analytics is accuracy – it’s the foundation for success and without it results quickly lose value.

Bango identify each individual visitor and provide the highest data accuracy by using a number of methods for identification.

The answers to your questions can be found here: http://analyticsonmobile.com/2009/10/13/bango-mobile-analytics-qa.html

Many thanks,

Beccy

Hi David – Thanks for dropping by. I will not actually update the information until it happens but it is noted in the comments here. I would certainly like to learn a little more about what the new Percent Mobile will look like. I will contact you offline when I began the data collection for each of the providers.

Hi Jose

Mobile analytics is an interesting area. From past experience, the ability to track unique users is a question that is often asked by clients looking for an analytical solution. Bango seem to be a strong contender because of their access to unique identifiers (though I don’t know how many MNOs they have this information with). If you analyse the traffic at the TCP/IP level there is a certain amount of ‘fingerprinting’ that can be done without access to MNO provided unique IDs but I don’t know how good accurate it is. I think Amethon promote this approach.

For high-traffic sites that need full control then network ’sniffer’ solution that sits on your own infrastructure is probably worth a consideration.

You are correct Jon, the key to any analytics solution is the accuracy of its visitor identification – it forms the foundation on which everything else is built, but is often overlooked in favour of pretty graphics.

Bango delivers the best accuracy by not depending on any one method of identity – we have a server based system that uses a wide range of methods and works on all devices and across any network connection. We have learned that no single approach to ID works fully across all mobile networks, something we learned from our years in mobile billing. So we use all the usual techniques, including cookies and other forms of fingerprinting but we then add things like authenticated ID’s supplied directly by a range of industry partners, including network operators.

It’s always best to see the improvements to your data quality first hand – simply grab a free trial from http://bango.com/analytics, add our simple tracking code to one of your pages and compare Bango against any current solution. I’m always interested to discuss people’s experiences and findings.

Andy,

VP Product Marketing

I had my own trials with some of the packages listed here and would recommend Amethon. Their ability to monitor the traffic flow is far more stable than javascript, image tag and server side.

Hi Ahmed – Thanks for dropping by. If you do have more information it would be great if you could expand on your comment and provide a better indication of why exactly you find one better than the others.
