Made in Quebec Mobile Applications

in Mobile Applications,News

The original article is in French, and you can find it here – ‘Applications mobiles «made in Québec».’  But since we are nice here at the Mobile Strategy Blog I am providing you with an English translation as well which you can find here.

I have fixed the translation (a little bit) and give you the first few lines:

In search of a nearby Chinese restaurant?  Need to fix a shelf?

There are applications for mobile phones for everything and developers here [Quebec] have a place in this new world.

These applications are very popular – so we are witnessing the birth of a new industry in a sector – telecommunications – which needs a boost to escape the economic gloom.

From experienced telecommunications veterans, web developers, video game programmers or even just Sunday programmers,  Quebec entrepreneurs are eager to win their share.  Over the past year, more than a dozen new developers, mostly very small companies with at most 8 to 10 employees, have brought to market applications for the Apple iPhone, the BlackBerry from Research In Motion and other competitors.

The only thing I have to say about the article is that I am surprised it doesn’t include links to the companies mentioned.  It speaks of Quebec and shows off how its companies are growing and exploiting the growth in mobility but then it doesn’t add a link or provide further information on those companies.  It is great that it mentions them but it could at least point to them as well.  Share a link and help them out.  If I had time I would provide you with the links to these companies (I may come back and refresh the post) or if you want to post the link in the comment section please feel free.

For starters, I know one of the firms mentioned in the article very well – Soluteo:

… which employs eight people, is experiencing strong growth since 2007.   The Montreal-based company has completed the design of a mobile edition of Yellow Pages for both the iPhone and BlackBerry.

I have personally played with both the iPhone and the BlackBerry Yellow Pages application and it is tres sweet.
